Accredited Online MBA Programs and Accreditation
When considering a distance learning program, one should be aware of the differences between accredited online MBA programs and non-accredited programs. This involves understanding the basics about accreditation. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that an institution upholds a certain quality level of education. This immediately leads to the question "What level of quality, and who defines this level of quality?". The answer to this question is two fold. It is not completely accurate to state that only accreditation agencies set the standards by which schools are judged. There are many accreditation agencies and not all of them are trustworthy. So, the Department of Education has released a list of accreditation agencies that are nationally recognized to be reliable in determining the quality of education at a particular institution. So, while accreditation agencies set education standards, the Department of Education sets standards for accreditation agencies. The short of the matter is, if you are looking for accredited online MBA programs, the process involves making sure the program is accredited, and making sure the accrediting agency is nationally recognized. There are many divisions among the recognized accreditation agencies. The two largest categories are national and regional agencies. In the case of business school accreditation, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is the most respected agency, having strict criteria for quality of education. However, the AACSB is one of many agencies to rely on when considering an online MBA. It should be mentioned that it is not mandatory for distance learning programs to be accredited. This is not to say all of them are worthless. There are many popular (which does not necessarily mean worthwhile) online MBA programs that are not accredited, such as the University of Phoenix. One must always practice due diligence when considering an online degree. For more information on national and regional agencies

Accreditation is especially pertinent to online education, as there is a larger potential for fraud. Also, accredited online MBA programs carry more validity with potential employers. Keep in mind there are many "diploma mills" backed by worthless agencies that will take your money without providing a useful education, so always do the necessary research.
