GMAT Registration and Test Day Tips

Proper GMAT registration is essential. There are many seemingly small logistical issues that can potentially interfere with your test day. Here are a few tips to ensure things run smoothly.

First and foremost, make sure you set the exam date at a time that will allow for proper preparation. Prior to GMAT registration, you should have formulated a study plan to help give you a time frame. It can also be useful to take a full length practice test to see "where you stand" with the material. This will help you pinpoint the areas that will take the most preparation. The exam will take about four hours, not including travel, so keep this in mind when you register for the GMAT.

GMAT registration is easy and can be done online at MBA.com. The process is straightforward, however, make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY when filling in the required information. For instance, you must fill in your name exactly as it is spelled on the forms of ID you will present at the test center. If you do not, you will be turned away without refund (the test costs $250 at the time of this writing). This may seem so obvious as to be not worth mentioning. However, this type of mistake is made. Also, make sure you read the information regarding rescheduling or canceling a test.

GMAT test dates are, for the most part, flexible if you register well in advance. However, there are certain times that do fill up more quickly, so registering earlier is better.

GMAT testing locations can differ in quality, so it is worth checking your options. Depending on your area, you may have a choice between two testing facilities. The are many forums devoted to all things GMAT, and there may be a discussion regarding the testing centers near you. At some point after your GMAT registration, you should drive the route to the testing center at the same time of your exam. A couple days before the exam may be preferable so it is fresh in your mind, and there is less chance of being unaware of a construction issue.

Another test day consideration is the utensils you will be given for scratch work. You are not allowed to bring anything into the testing room, so you will be given a dry erase marker and a pad of laminated sheets. They are extremely troublesome for some people, as they can be hard to get use too. It can be especially hard if you're a left handed writer, as your hand can drag across your work. It is worth it to do a little research to see if you feel this will be a problem for you. This issue is discussed at length on many forums. Furthermore, you can order GMAT scratch kits and practice with them, if you wish.

To be well prepared for the GMAT, you should, at the very least, download the GMAT PREP software from the MBA.com site. This software was created by the test makers and employs the same algorithm and format as the real GMAT. The is no better representation of the test. You will be able to get a feel for the questions and develop the timing necessary to score well. Furthermore, you can become familiar with the format of the test software so that there will be no surprises on test day, and you won't have to waste time reading directions. Make sure you take advantage of this free GMAT preparation tool. For reviews of other great GMAT prep materials click here.

As always, make sure you eat properly and get plenty of sleep before the test. And reread all the requirements for checking in at the test center so there are no issues.

While the subject of GMAT registration may seem trivial compared to the huge task of preparing for the GMAT, you will find that making sure the test day runs smoothly will be very beneficial to your testing experience.
