MBA Preparation

Given the incredible amount of information MBA students must retain, a little MBA preparation is never out of order.

Whether you are attending one of the top business schools or have opted for an online MBA program that fits your schedule, being prepared will help you survive the rigors of your first year.

This is especially true of non-business undergrads, who often find it hard to keep up with classmates with business related majors. It can be particularly hard to develop the quantitative skills needed to stay afloat. Many times, the quantitative "summer boot camp" is not enough to get students up to speed.

There is, however, a great resource to combat this problem. It is a program call MBAMATH, created by Peter Regan, who among other things, taught math to incoming MBA students at the Tuck School of Business. His course is geared towards covering the basics of the quantitative concepts you will encounter as a student. Furthermore, MBAMATH covers the basic Excel functions you will need as well.

This course will be incredibly beneficial to those concerned about their math abilities, or those simply looking to refresh their memory. Furthermore, many MBA programs know the value of the course and offer a discount for a one year subscription, so, make sure you check if your school offers a discount before you purchase a subscription.

If you are concerned about digesting the large amount of information you will encounter as an MBA student, it may be worth your while to check out The Ten Day MBA, or a similar publication. The Ten Day MBA is designed to impart MBA knowledge to those who cannot participate in an MBA program. Obviously, there is no substitute to going through a program, however, the book can be very beneficial when it comes to wrapping your mind around business concepts. When you encounter them in your classes, they will be familiar, and that much easier to assimilate.

Now, everyone must decide for themselves if they feel they need these (or similar) resources; some do, some don't. But for the most, MBA preparation will be worthwhile. To check out the MBAMATH website for quantitative MBA preparation click here.
