Why Pursue an MBA
What is an MBA
MBA Hiring Outlook and Opportunities
Why pursue an MBA? Well, it's a pretty broad question with many potential answers. MBA salaries are certainly an incentive, as well as the fact that jobs for MBA graduates have the strong potential to become lucrative and satisfying careers. But the real benefits of an MBA become apparent when you focus the question on the individual. An MBA is a tool to facilitate the fulfillment of a goal, or goals. Of course, people have unique aspirations and motivations, therefore, an MBA will benefit them differently (though, the general perks mentioned above still apply).
But, it is important to understand how an MBA will benefit you. Essentially, why do you want an MBA? You most likely will not impress anybody on the admission's board if your answer to this question is "to make more money". This is not to say money shouldn't be an incentive- an MBA can be an avenue to financial stability and a better life for you and your loved ones. However, to make it through the rigors of an MBA program, and the career that follows, one must have clear goals and the motivation to see them through to the end. As mentioned earlier, the answer to "why pursue an MBA" will be different for many people. For some, it is a fairly straight forward process. If you are extremely competent with numbers, have an interest in how the business world functions, and have completed undergrad classes that foster these interests, an MBA in Finance would certainly be an obvious degree choice. By the same token, someone who has a desire to improve the health care system would benefit from an MBA in Health Care Administration- you get the point. But the process of coming to an MBA is not always so cut and dry. Many use an MBA to facilitate a career change; the degree can enable them to break into a certain field and make a living from something they are passionate about. It may be that you wish to start your own business, but need the knowledge to be successful. An MBA instills in you the ability to create a business and efficiently maintain it- it teaches everything from budget and cash-flow-analysis to effectively marketing an idea to investors and the public. Of course, it is important to find a program that fits your needs and supports your goals. Now it must be mentioned that an MBA is not a magic bullet (though one could argue that depends on the program). Especially in this time of economic decline, there is no guarantee that you will immediately land your dream job. The hard work does not stop after you graduate. Now it may seem that the question "why pursue an MBA" is an obvious one, and that the previous paragraphs are simply stating the obvious. However, consider this: Having a clear understanding of why you are getting your MBA will be important not only to you, but to the admission's boards and your classmates as well. Universities want to create, and your classmates want to be in, a learning environment full of people with clear goals and a clarity of vision that drives them to succeed.
